A lot of the students within our classroom setting are English Language Learners so it's very important to build a vocabulary for those students. We'll often do this through shared reading, often through a big book.
A book such as What Will the Weather Be Like Today? has a lot of opportunities to learn key vocabulary. There are a lot of words to describe the weather itself, such as windy. There are a lot of vivid pictures within the book so that students can, for example, see the hills or the sea or ocean. This is a book that has a lot within the illustrations that could be discussed to enrich their vocabulary. After you've read aloud this big book students can then go to the listening center to independently read and listen to the text with a child-sized version of the text and an audio tape.
