Students are encouraged to utilize the room as a resource when reading and beginning to learn about the concept of print. Basically, we do this through Write Around the Room. Students take a clipboard and then they copy words from around the room that are listed on charts or on labels.
Sometimes I give the students a prompt such as print a word that begins with the letter S, and they'll go around madly searching for words that begin with the letter S and write those down. Sometimes I ask them go around the room and search for words that they don't know and write those down, and then they bring them back to the carpet and we talk about how we can actually decipher what those words are and learn strategies through that. At other points, students determine their own purpose for writing around the room.
