On this board here I teach students explicitly how numbers are formed as well as letters, and the characteristics of those numbers and letters. For example, if I'm teaching a particular letter we'll discuss whether that letter reaches up to the sky, whether it sits on the ground, or whether it digs into the ground. The children become cognizant of that and then print their letters accordingly.
Right now we're currently focusing on numbers and number creation. So the students are using the snowflakes here as a model for how to print their numbers or how to print their number words. Within these popcorn containers there are also numbers as well as number words, so the student will basically pick out a piece of popcorn, unravel it, see here that they have a number nine, and then print the number nine on the board.
There's also a fun activity that you can conduct with these bins. It's based on a Tribes strategy entitled Snowball Fight. In each of these popcorn bins I have sight words. Each student will choose a piece of popcorn and when I say 3...2...1...popcorn fight they'll throw their popcorn across the room and then they run and get a new piece of popcorn. And then they'll unravel their piece of popcorn and see what sight word that they have and then they present their sight word to the class and read it.
