The children are asked to listen to a story which I make up from this big Jolly Phonics book. Within the story, there will be words that have the sound that I will be using for that day. A new letter sound is introduced every other day. I start in September and then we work through all of the 42 letter sounds of the English language. Along with my big book and my story, the children are listening to me and looking at the pages to find a word that may have the letter sound. For instance, on this page, they will be learning about the letter 'T', /t/. And when they are learning about the /t/ sound, they will look at the picture and tell me words that they can find within the picture, such as ten/t/ or ca/t/. And then I will ask them: well where do you hear the sound of the letter 'T'? Do you hear it at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end?
Once the children have told me their sounds within each of the words that they have chosen, I will take chart paper, and I will chart those words for them. The more that the children look at the chart, the more they are building their reading and writing vocabulary. Once I have introduced six of those letter sounds, the children can learn how to put those sounds together to form 26 words and build on their vocabulary. It's an amazing system, and very quick and very simple to use.
